Is The Old Way Of Doing SEO Dead?

This is a question people keep asking me. Do the old SEO techniques still work with all of the Google changes? I think I get asked the question because I have always preached and still continue to preach that the old tried and true SEO techniques that I learned really well 8-10 years ago still work today.

The Google changes happen because people become so good at gaming the system that they have to make changes to ensure that the results stay as relevant and pleasing to the users as possible.

This does not mean that the old proven techniques of SEO don’t work any more. This simply means the tactics that have been invented over the last few years (ie link networks) to game the system don’t work anymore. The core techniques are still the same. Optimize the pages of your site. Produce high quality content and get high quality links and your site will rank high in the search engines.

If people are telling you that it doesn’t work anymore it is because 1) they don’t really understand SEO 2) they need something new to talk about so they make stuff up or 3) they are trying to sell you something.

See where Prosperly ranks for the phrase internet marketing and tell me the old school methods don’t work anymore. If you do SEO the right way, it will still get you to the top of the search engines.

  • True! True! True!

I was just talking with someone about this very same topic the other day and to me it is very clear. The methods used to accomplish the end goal is what is being frowned upon, not the end goal.

    Old SEO techniques live on!
New ways of cheating the system are dead.

  • I agree that Google has only changed in ways that prevent the spamming of the system. To this end they are now putting a lot of emphasis on Social Proof as a means of ranking a website

I agree with this post, I also keep working the same way, on page optimization plus getting quality links, with focus on quality before quantity with increasing focus on the social aspect and getting links, shares, mentiones there. But there are so many SEO guys or online marketers who keep pushing clients into getting volumes of useless links and 1) it often harms their sites and 2) consequentky harms us marketers as a breed since clients have problems trusting us. I see a big issue in the fact, that all IT guys are now marketers and since for them SEO is a technical issue they claim themselves experts in SEO but they are not the business savvy guys who think first about how to really help businesses getting more revenues..

  • Thanks for pointing me to this post Adam, My quest for finding the “new & updated way of doing SEO” is over.

  • Adam. I took you up on googling “Internet Marketing.” There were About 616,000,000 results (0.24 seconds) and just below the sponsored links, was prosperly, com. Not that I’m bragging for you, but that’s quite an accomplishment in such a crowded niche being Numero Uno, the Big Cheese….Well you get the idea.

    Congrats to you.
Your new number one fan, Rob.

  • Rob, Im glad I finally have a fan. :-)

I’ve always been a big fan of article submission and what that can do for your SEO.

If you use the right anchor text in the HTML resource box at the bottom of each article, you will also help the search engines to get a much better idea of what your site is all about, helping your rankings even further.
